After being one of the top selling books of 2016, an A Gentleman In Moscow adaptation has been long-awaited. Based on the novel by Amor Towles, this story captured hearts and book clubs and has just been waiting for the chance to be brought to life on screen.
While it’s taken a while to get there, the list of names signing up to portray the lead character proves that this is a story that wants to be told on screen.

About The Book:
A Gentleman in Moscow immerses us in another elegantly drawn era with the story of Count Alexander Rostov. When, in 1922, he is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, the count is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery.
Brimming with humour, a glittering cast of characters, and one beautifully rendered scene after another, this singular novel casts a spell as it relates the count’s endeavour to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be a man of purpose.

The book was first released in 2016 and stayed on the New York Times hardcover bestseller list for 59 weeks.
An A Gentleman In Moscow adaptation was announced the following year by Entertainment One. Then in 2018 Kenneth Branagh was brought on for the lead role, along with Tom Harper to direct. However the project stalled and there was no public news for multiple years.
In August 2022 it was announced that Ewan McGregor had replaced Branagh and that the series was moving forward with distribution set for Paramount’s new streaming service. A new showrunner was also reported with Harper staying on as an executive producer.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead joined the cast in February 2023.
At the end of the month author Amor Towles posted a picture on Instagram of McGregor on set in costume, announcing that filming had begun.
In July filming was halted because of the SAG-AFTRA strike.
Who Owns The Rights:
Entertainment One and Paramount have partnered to produce the series. The series will air in the United States on Showtime and internationally on Paramount+.
Who Is Attached:
Ewan McGregor will star as the lead character. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has signed on to play Anna Urbanova.
Ben Vanstone is the showrunner and an executive producer. Tom Harper, Xavier Marchand, and Amor Towles are all also attached as executive producers.
Filming is taking place in various locations around England including Bolton and Halifax.
With filming beginning in early Spring 2023, it is likely the series will be released at some point during 2024. However, depending on how long the SAG-AFTRA strike lasts this might be delayed.
