We Were Liars Adaptation: Everything We Know So Far About The Exciting New Series

The last few years there has been a resurgence of some older books thanks to the internet book-centric social media communities, and this We Were Liars adaptation is a direct result of those fans. A resurgence in 2020 led to both an adaptation deal and a prequel book for this young adult mystery.

Current Production Status:

Filming is on hold due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. The series was expected to film throughout Summer 2023.
 

We Were Liars Adaptation Timeline:

The book was first published in 2014, and had a resurgence in 2020 thanks to the social media book communities.
In June 2022 author E. Lockhart announced that a television series was being developed based on the book.
Amazon Studios joined the project and greenlit a season order in March 2023 with casting beginning immediately and filming expected to begin in June. Lockhart confirmed in a May 2023 Tweet that the open casting call had ended.

Filming was delayed due to the dual WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike and the project will be on hold until a deal is reached.
 

Who Owns The Rights:

Julie Plec acquired the rights to this book, and others from E. Lockhart, as part of her deal with Universal Television. Amazon Studios joined the project later and will distribute the series on their streaming service, Prime Video.
 

Who Is Attached:

There have been no announcements made yet regarding the cast.

Filming is expected to place in Massachusetts (which is where the book is set) and Los Angeles.
 

Estimated Release:

With filming supposed to occur in Summer 2023 it was likely this series could have come out in 2024, however the SAG-AFTRA strike delaying production means we probably won’t see this until 2025.

‘Family of Liars’ and ‘Again Again’ were both optioned at the same time and by the same companies that are doing We Were Liars. Production on either of those probably won’t begin until this project is close to being done at the earliest.
